Anthropocene Mixtape: At the water's edge
What if our urgent stories about climate change were shared as immersive soundscapes expanding the field of Acoustic Ecology? My answer is a sonic reconstruction of this lost abundance, an Anthropocene Mixtape Series to explore imagined futures with a portal to the past.
Our bird populations are declining. I've been exploring what would a restored population, 50-90% more bids, would sound like. In 2024 I produced an Owl Edition exploring the year-round song of Michigan Owls. This year, I propose to explore birds specific to the water's edge. As Grand Rapids reimagines a public waterfront, I propose soundscapes as a tool to engage the community with the sense of possibility, if we design our waterfronts as functioning ecosystems we can restore declining bird populations in part by restoring important habitats. For at the water's edge, I am focusing on year round Michigan waterfront birds whose populations have experienced significant decline.
Using sidewalk silhouettes of birds in flight as shadowy memorials to past populations soaring overhead, I ground the soundscape in a site specific walk along the waterfront. I see this as a pilot for a more permanent installation alongside habitat restoration and non-human architecture.
This installation is a proposal for the 2025 ArtPrize.

2024
A Sonic Exploration of Lost Abundance
As 60-90% of Owl populations have declined since 1970, I wondered, what would 90% more owls sound like? What if our urgent stories about climate change were shared as immersive soundscapes expanding the field of Acoustic Ecology? My answer is a sonic reconstruction of this lost abundance, an Anthropocene Mixtape Series to explore imagined futures with a portal to the past.

Listen
Listen to a reimagined nocturnal sound-scape with a parliament of shadows representing the lost population of Michigan owls flying overhead (headphones encouraged).
Reminiscent of a full moon walk along the shores of Lake Michigan, the sound file is derived from field recorded owl files arranged in a midnight song. What does darkness teach us about listening? |
Public Art
